University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is an 811-bed public teaching hospital and level 1 trauma cter affiliated with the University of Iowa. UI Hospitals and Clinics is part of University of Iowa Health Care, a partnership that includes the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and the University of Iowa Physicians group practice.
It is located on the university campus in Iowa City, Iowa at Melrose Avue and Hawkins Drive near Kinnick Stadium. At times during televised Hawkeye football games, the hospital can be se in the background. The hospital is one of three in Iowa City, the others being Mercy Hospital and the Iowa City VA Health Care System, a VA medical cter.
UI Hospitals and Clinics employs over 7, 100 people and is overse by the Iowa Board of Regts. It is Iowa's only comprehsive, tertiary-level cter and also its premier medical facility. In addition to taking care of local patits, people throughout the state and region are oft referred to the university's hospitals for treatmt of serious or complex illnesses or injuries.

The University of Iowa began medical services in 1873 wh its medical departmt tered into an agreemt with the Sisters of Mercy to operate a small hospital in the community. Davport, Iowa physician Washington Freeman Peck and other physicians raised $5, 000 to rovate a vacant school building known as Mechanics Academy into a 20-bed hospital. This hospital had two op wards for both m and wom, four private rooms, and a surgical amphitheater. Dr. Peck convinced the Mother Superior of the Davport-based Sisters of Mercy to sd nuns to Iowa City to help care for patits. This arrangemt lasted until 1885, wh the Sisters moved to a nearby vacant mission and oped Mercy Hospital one year later.
It soon became appart that a new hospital was needed as the university was outgrowing its original facility. In 1896 the state of Iowa approved the needed appropriations. A 65-bed hospital was built in 1898 where the school's Seashore Hall is now located. This facility was state of the art at the time of its construction, with both electrical lighting and steam heating. The hospital featured a 200-seat amphitheater for instructional purposes.
Following passage of indigt care laws in 1928, patit admissions increased greatly. The currt hospital was built in 1928 as a 735-bed hospital. At the time of its construction, the hospital building was one of the largest in the country.

The Carver College of Medicine is the medical school of the University of Iowa. The Carver College of Medicine can trace its roots back to the 1870s.
University of Iowa Childr's Hospital was founded in 1919. As Iowa's only comprehsive childr's hospital, it provides care for childr from birth to young adulthood. The new UI Stead Family Childr's Hospital building oped in February 2017 and includes more than 170 pediatric doctors, surgeons, and dtists, and more than 500 specially trained pediatric nurses.
And is home to Iowa's only Level 4 NICU, Level 1 Trauma Cter for pediatrics, pediatric dermatologists, pediatric getics team, pediatric ral dialysis, pediatric rheumatologists, pediatric urologist, pediatric heart, kidney, liver, pancreas, and blood and bone marrow transplants. Patits come from every county in Iowa, nearly every state in the United States, and several international countries.

Rectly in the mid-2010s, the hospital started an affiliate program with a slew of other hospitals across the state of Iowa. These include Gesis Medical Cter and Mercy Hospital, among others. The University of Iowa hospital and Clinics has an office within the Gesis Medical Cter building located on Middle Road in Bettdorf, Iowa.The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has seen a 74 percent drop in infections through a predictive modeling program targeted at surgical sites.
John Cromwell, MD, clinical associate professor of surgery at Iowa, said his team used a combination of process, technology and the human factor to leverage live surgical data to inform their decisions.
"We basically developed a data warehouse to use at the back end for all of our modeling. That was the first thing we did right, " Cromwell said.

Cromwell will share insights gleaned from Iowa’s work during the “Real-Time Data, Predictive Analytics Can Reduce Infections, ” session at HIMSS16. "We started very small, writing R code and running models off of desktop computers.”
As the project grew, Iowa built out infrastructure to include enterprise tools like Dell’s Statistica, which also demanded new investments in personnel and IT resources.
Indeed, predictive analytics tools are fairly mature at this point, Cromwell said, but access to data science practitioners is a barrier. “We have lots of informaticists who are doing research, but they're not practitioners from the standpoint of being able to just bring them in and say get going on this project, ” he said.

"You really need someone who's a content expert – a physician or provider who understands the clinical problem quite well, ” Cromwell said. “Someone who understands the whole infrastructure on the back end, and a data scientist in the middle who can translate those two.”
Asked for some tips that might be applicable to other providers looking to try similar projects, Cromwell said one important first step is to "pick a high-visibility problem, but start on a small scope. Don't try to change your entire organization' infrastructure in order to begin using predictive analytics. We wanted to incrementally increase infrastructure to demonstrate the ROI of doing this."
So far, that ROI has been hard to argue with: Begun back in 2012, the first two years of the project saw SSIs reduced by 58 percent; after the third year, they'd been reduced by 74 percent.
Double Degree Program At International Universities In 4 Years
"We still don't have all the surgical departments even close to all using this, we chose to focus on divisions where the opportunity was the greatest, " Cromwell explained. "We chose the top two or three areas, and it's had a huge impact just in those. As far as I know, this is the first systematic approach to really make clinical decisions. It's gone beyond research now, and this is our clinical practice."
Surgical site infections, after all, are "probably the most costly complication, the most common healthcare associated infection, the leading source of readmission for patients to the hospital, " said Cromwell. "So tackling this is a big goal for us."
